SCHENECTADY — The St. Kateri Fair Trade Market took place Saturday at the parish school gym in Schenectady. The annual, one-day event is the only fair trade market in the Capital Region, and was be held in-person for the first time since 2019.
It featured local vendors with global connections; shoppers found many ethically sourced gifts. Together the vendors represent talented artisans from dozens of countries and a wide range of cultural traditions. Sales of handmade gifts provide fair, dignified economic opportunities for artisans, many of them women, who live in impoverished communities. Many gifts, like handwoven pine-needle baskets or upcycled handbags, are made from natural or recycled materials.
